Although official records such as the Vasti of the king (Dharmapaddhati) for this period are written in the local Marathi language, some antiquarian lists of the Samksheta period (12th and 13th century) in Maharashtra and certain political and religious texts such as Kalyan Mala (11th century) have been written in the local Marathi. Some records in the Samskt period such as the text called Bouraketu seem to have been translated from Sanskrit into Marathi. Examples of such texts include the Shashtra of Hemadri. It is not known at which period the use of Marathi language in literature in Maharashtra began but the Satpati in Marathi also suggests that Marathi was used by then.[4]
The most notable literary figure of this period is Devabhatta. His Ramachandra also known as Ramachandra Gitara was written around 1150 AD. His other famous work is the Dharmavikridhara written around 1184 AD. Both these works are epic poems about the Ramayana, written in Marathi. Another significant figure is Bhima who wrote a big epic called Abhiche: Samajik ity addhana. This is a commentary on the part of Bhima on his career. He is reported to have also written Mahabhagvat (The good city). d2c66b5586
